Beach day hacks every parent needs to know

The diaper trick, the sand trick, and the snack trick that have saved more beach days than I can count. Learned the hard way, mostly.

We all love a beach day: the sunshine, the waves, sand between your toes. What makes it actually good with little kids is being prepared. These are the hacks and products that have earned a permanent spot in our beach bag — most of them learned the hard way.

Stay dry: the diaper hack

My first tip is one I learned by getting peed on. I remember walking through our hotel on the way to the pool in a shirt drenched with pee.

Here’s the fix: put a regular diaper over the swimsuit on the way to the beach or pool. Swim diapers don’t hold pee — they’re only meant for the water. Once you’re ready to get in, undo the diaper and save it for after swimming if it’s still dry.

Sun safety UV stickers

Sun safety comes first for our family, and I love UV stickers for this. You stick one on your child’s arm or leg — if it turns purple, that’s your cue to reapply sunscreen. If it’s clear, you’re good. It takes the guesswork out of a long day outside.

Set a sunscreen timer

The other sunscreen tip: set a timer on your phone. It sounds obvious, and it’s the single thing most likely to keep everyone from burning. My go-to is Blue Lizard because it’s mineral-based and safe for kids. A sunscreen applicator is also a great way to let kids help without getting it in their eyes.

Getting the sand off

Gritty sand in a hot car on the way home is nobody’s idea of a good time. Two things that work:

  • Sand removal pads. Compact, easy to grab out of your bag, and they take the sand off in seconds.
  • Baby powder. A little sprinkle pulls the moisture off your skin and the sand brushes right off. Total game-changer.

Bonus tip: bring a mesh laundry basket for sandy things. Everything goes in, the sand falls out.

Snacks you prep the night before

When you hit the hangry stage of a beach day, you’ll go to great lengths to fix it fast. My hack: cut a whole pack of Hawaiian rolls all the way through, add your meat and cheese, and put the sauce between the meat and cheese so the bread doesn’t go soggy. Slice the sandwiches individually ahead of time so they’re grab-and-go later.

Easy prep, no meltdowns, and you’ll thank yourself when you’re one-handed under an umbrella.

Where to hide your phone and wallet

Ever wonder where to stash your phone and wallet while you’re in the water? Roll them into a clean, unused diaper. Nobody is willing to risk opening a potentially dirty diaper. Trust me, this one’s golden.

Stay cool with a portable fan

It gets hot at the beach, and balancing sun time with staying cool is half the job. A portable clip fan attaches to the stroller and is safe around babies and small kids because they can’t get their fingers through the slots. Park it in the shade with the fan going and you have a legitimate nap spot.

Use a snow sled (yes, really)

Need an easy way to haul everything from the car to the sand? Wagons and strollers get stuck (if you’re using a stroller, pull it instead of pushing). A snow sled is lightweight, holds the cooler and bags and towels, and you can dump the sand off it before it goes back in the car. Get one with a long handle and it doubles for actual snow in the winter.

Final thoughts

With the right prep, a few hacks, and a lot of snacks, beach days go from survival mode to the part of the week everybody remembers. Have fun out there this summer — and tag me so I can see it.
